this kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 cpu virtualbox

Got this message while trying to execute the Hadoop Virtual Box image from HortonWorks: "this kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i000 cpu virtualbox"

For some unknown reason the VM was set as 32 bit Ubuntu. Changed it to 64 bit and it worked.
